How to 'Zag' Your Job Search

The economy and the market just zigged big-time. Here’s how to adjust any job search.

April 08, 2025

Congratulations—you’re looking for a new job at one of the most interesting moments in US corporate history. In the wake of market crashes caused by the announcement of new tariffs, then a pause on many of those same tariffs, many firms will need to wait for the dust to settle before more hiring.

To be sure, the last jobs report was positive, with 228,000 jobs added in March—but this was just prior to the trade and market trauma. All of it is forcing many job hunters, whether employed or unemployed, to do some rerouting, including analyzing how certain industries will be impacted by potential tariffs (or even the threat of them). “Track which sectors will benefit, and which will shrink,” says Moses Zonana, senior client partner in the Technology practice at Korn Ferry—and propel yourself toward the likely winners. Here are five ways to do it:

Make a strategy.

Which sectors in your job search will be most impacted? “Form a thesis,” says Zonana. Whether you’re looking at countries that will be impacted minimally or significantly, or roles likely to multiply (such as those related to supply chains), now is the time to redirect your search accordingly.

Get vocal.

Yes, there’s an opportunity here. Executives are reading more than ever, whether it’s the news or smart analysis of it. This is your moment to write think pieces and post them on LinkedIn, or otherwise apply your expertise, says Maneesh Dube, senior client partner in the Executive Search practice at Korn Ferry. “Be known in your topic,” he advises.

Skip overwhelmed hiring managers.

This is not the month to request face time with the CFO, says Zonana. “Your requests will get lost in the noise, then be harder to reengage smartly.” Target professionals less affected by the recent changes.

Consider niches now opening up.

H-1B visa registrations are down nearly 40% from last year, with 288,652 fewer candidates in the US. Keep an eye on LinkedIn for announcements of current visa holders heading abroad, or focus on roles, where applicable, that previously attracted foreign applicants.

Look at essential roles.

While many firms are pausing on hiring decisions, this does not include roles broadly defined as essential. For example, when you see a vacancy for a position that’s undoubtedly fundamental to the sanity of fellow workers, prioritize applying for it, say experts.
