Cape Verde, or Cabo Verde as it’s more commonly known, is an archipelago of 10 islands off the coast of Senegal. The former Portuguese colony is one of the safest and most economically and politically stable places throughout Africa. While Cabo Verde has long been a popular winter destination for Europeans, its digital nomad visa has remote workers burying their toes in the picturesque beaches year round. And there is plenty to do, from desert stargazing to climbing volcanoes to watching sea turtles lay their eggs on shore.
All the islands in this archipelago have unique personalities and outdoor opportunities, including bird-watching, desert-dune surfing, and floating in the buoyant lakes at the Pedra de Lume salt flats.
The economy, previously largely dependent on tourism, has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels and is intentionally diversifying, expanding the “blue economy” by harnessing its marine resources.
The people of Cape Verde embody what is known as morabeza, which describes a way of being that includes friendliness, hospitality, and a gentle approach to life.
Mindelo, a city on the island of São Vicente, has one of the Atlantic’s most highly regarded carnivals, with lively samba processions marching through the streets for weeks.
